About a month and a half ago, I submitted a short story to a literary magazine called the Blue Monday Review. Still waiting to hear back.

My New Year's resolution was to write one short story every day. That's not working out so well for me, but I have been writing more. I think I will put some more stories out there to different places...

A long time ago, I bought a bunch of books and things to help me get off my duff and write more. Last week, while I was cleaning out the house, I found them. I decided to take the writing prompts and do one each day. It's been a little difficult to balance with the kid and our pets and my parents moving but I am somehow getting it done. I may or may not put them here, I haven't decided if they are good enough for people to read yet. One of them is on its merry way to a literary zine so inquire about being published, so here's hoping it actually makes it.

The baby in the shopping cart has a blue shirt and brown pants. He is sleeping in a car seat that is positioned in the front of the cart. His mother is looking at shampoo on the shelf in front of her. She picks out a pink bottle and places it in the cart. As they move down the aisle, the baby begins to cry loudly. The mother tries to shush him, but he won't be consoled. He cries louder and louder as they move through the store. People stare and whisper. The baby eventually goes to sleep and the mother continues shopping.

The woman is pushing a shopping cart through the busy store. Her newborn child is crying loudly. Other people notice and stare. Some make comments under their breath. The woman ignores them and continues shopping. Soon, the baby falls asleep. Mother and child finish their trip and leave the store.

I should be in bed.....I need to be in bed......my son is going to wake up at 7 on the dot no matter when I fall asleep.....but here I am, wasting time again. I have writer's block.....I'm writing an epic fantasy novel and I can't get past the freaking first chapter. I feel like it is moving too fast, but when I go back to re-write scenes, nothing makes sense. I have no idea how to lengthen the story. There's probably a simple solution, but I just haven't found it.

I am taking the course Crafting an Effective Writer: Tools of the Trade on Coursera. My journal assignments are going to be held here.

Assignment #1

The baby drinks from his orange sippy cup as he watches the funny show on television. A little dog is sleeping on a blue bed and the hero is trying to wake up a sleeping princess. The little baby is rolling around on the floor in his green pajamas, taking bites of dry cereal. He has a dirty diaper. His young mother changes him. She has brown hair just like him.
